1893: First St. Patrick Church Dedicated

This is a continuing segment taken from the history of St. Patrick's parish that was found in the time capsule from 1908. It is recorded just as it was written.

It (the first church, constructed in 1893) was dedicated Sunday, July 30th, 1893. This was a great day for the Catholics of Havelock. Referring to the occasion the "Havelock Times" of that week has the following: "St. Patrick's Church of this city was dedicated last Sunday morning, the services beginning at 10:30 o'clock. Rt. Rev. Bishop Bonacum officiated at the dedicatory services in his usual impressive manner. His remarks concerning the erection of the church were very complimentary to the citizens of this community. Rev. Patrick McShane sang the solemn mass. Rev. Joseph Roche then delivered an eloquent sermon in which he portrayed the good that had been and will be done by the building of this church, and thanked God that the Catholics of Havelock had a place to observe the rites of their religion. His sermon was too long to be reproduced here.

Rev. Peter Welling of the Franciscan Fathers was master of ceremonies. The music was rendered by the full choir of St. Theresa's Pro-Cathedral of Lincoln. Mrs. Alexis Halter presiding at the organ. A large company from other places were present consisting of marshal and aids. Catholic Union Club of Lincoln led by F.L. Mary, thirty members wearing the insigma of the order; the Lansing Theatre band of fifteen pieces; division No. 1 A.O. H. Lincoln forty-five men in full regalia commanded by James Kinney-this society carried the stars and stripes and the green banner of the order; division No. 2, A.O.H.
