1866: Rev. Emmanuel Hartig celebrates Mass in Havelock

The following is a continuation of the history that was found in the time capsule from 1908. It is reprinted here in the exact way that it was worded (and punctuated) in the original.

The first priest to exercise his sacred duties within the limits of the present congregation of St. Patrick's, Havelock, Nebr, was (it is said) the very Rev Emmanuel Hartig O.S.B. Vicar General of the Diocese of Lincoln and pastor of St. Benedict's Church, Nebraska City, Nebr., (The good priest still lives and recently retired to the Benedictine monastery in Atkinson, Kansas) More than 40 years ago this zealous man of God came on horse-back from the far distant Nebraska City, where he then already was stations, and looking up the scattered sheep of his flock he gathered them together at the various farm houses and administered to their wants, preached the word of God and dispensed the divine mysteries. It was about the year 1866 that the first Mass was said and this is Moran's house about one mile northeast of Havelock. Fr. Emmanuel held services also in the homes of the McDevitt's, Mike Shea's and Harrington's, as did later on Fathers Kelly, Curtis, and others in different houses, where the Catholics of the surrounding country would assemble to attend divine services.
