1914: Farewell to the Franciscans

Although St. Patrick’s parish had its fine new church, there was still an inconvenient situation to contend with: no rectory. The Franciscan Fathers who were pastors during those early years continued to come out from St. Francis de Sales parish at 18th and J streets in Lincoln to serve the parishioners. Their time at St. Patrick’s was drawing to a close, however. The parish no longer qualified as a mission, and so it was that in 1914 the Franciscan Fathers turned the parish over to the Lincoln diocese. Those early pastors, Franciscans from Cincinnati, Ohio, had seen St. Patrick’s through the beginning years of parish life. A new era was ushered in with the diocesan appointment of Father Daniel B. O’Connor.
