1893: St. Patrick Congregation Organized

This is a continuation of the history of early St. Patrick’s parish found in the 1908 time capsule. It is reprinted here exactly as it was written there.

It was in January 1893 that St. Patrick’s congregation was organized by Fr. Peter. On February 5th he said the first Mass ever celebrated in Havelock in the basement of the building now occupied by Theo. Jacobs, Dry Goods and Grocery Store in the Walton block east of the Bank Building and two blocks north of the church. Father Peter proceeded at once in selecting a site and collecting funds for the erection of a suitable house of worship. As early as April 26th of the same year (1893) he purchased one and one-half lots for $600.00 the other one and one-half lots being donated by the Lancaster Land Co. The plans and specifications being made by Artemns Roberts, architect, and the contract for the building being awarded to William Dullenty the work on the new church began immediately. This work progressed so rapidly that the building was completed in three months. (Continued)
