1908: What to Do Without a Church?

What must have been the emotions that Father Polycarp experienced as he witnessed the fiery destruction of his parish church on that Friday morning of April 10, 1908? Once the immediate disaster had made itself felt, he must have wondered where his parishioners would hear Mass that Sunday. How would funerals, baptisms, marriages be handled? The details of those events are not immediately available, but there are some answers (plus even more questions). At one point, Masses were said in the dance hall above John and Sam’s grocery store on the southeast corner of 62nd and Havelock Avenue. Once the dance was over on Saturday night and clean-up completed, chairs would be set up for Mass on Sunday morning. Perhaps some parishioners attended services in Greenwood, Davey, and other communities nearby. St. Francis de Sales at 18th and J Street in Lincoln was the headquarters for the Franciscan Fathers at that time, but that church, originally intended to serve the German community, was some distance from the Havelock area.
