Time Capsule 1908!

Father Schweiger opened the time capsule that had been enclosed with the cornerstone of St. Patrick’s new brick church in 1908. The small ceremony took place after the 10:00 Mass on May 31, 2015, and was marked by appropriate drama on the part of both Fr. Schweiger and the crowd of parishioners.

Wrapped into a small metal box were several items: a parish census for 1908, naming each family and the children, along with the added information of money promised, assessed, and paid; two pictures, one of the church that had been built in 1893, and the other of its destruction in a fire on April 10, 1908; a history of the parish from its inception to the laying of the cornerstone of the new church; two newspapers from that time, The Havelock Times (Nov. 12, 1908) and The Lincoln Daily Star (Nov. 15, 1908), and a list of names for the “Subscription of Business Men.”

The parish history is being completed to the present so that the entire story of St. Patrick’s can be included in the time capsule that is being prepared for the new church. We will include that entire history in upcoming bulletins.
